GRASS MANTIS ~ THESPROTIA GRIMINIS

Grass Mantis ( Thesprotia Griminis ) This is not the common praying mantis insect, these look like a stick insect. The grasslike mantis grows to about 5 inches long. It is often confused with a stick insect and even confused with its cousin, the stick mantis..

After the mantis becomes an adult, she will lay up to 15 eggs! Full grown female mantids die after the completion of ootheca/egg production (at about one year of age) at which time the rare insect can be dried and mounted. A rare mantis of a large size (five inches) to add to a nice insect collection.

Winter shipping is not a problem, the mantids are shipped with a heat pack in the shipping box. The mantids are very cozy during transit so do not worry if it is cold in your area if you plan to raise your mantis indoors.

CARE PROVISIONS FOR THE THESPROTIA GRIMINIS MANTIS SPECIES :

The rare Grass Mantis grows to 5 inches long!
1. The container will need to be at least 12 inches high and 12 inches accross. An acquarium with a screen lid is best for this species. The screen lid will need to be lined with a section of nylon material while the mantis is still a baby so that the small feeder insects can not escape. Adequate ventilation is very important! There needs to be at least a 2x2 inch vent covered with nylon material to provide enough ventilation. There should be a 2 inch wide 14 inch long section of nylon screen mounted inside the container at a 45 degree angle. The screen will serve as a perch for the mantis, the mantis will also use this surface to molt (shed skin) which the mantis will do 7 times before it becomes a full grown adult. No plants or dirt are required inside the mantis container. A plain white paper towel should be placed along the floor of the container to prevent water puddles when spray misting the mantis enclosure.

2. Food : For the first 4 weeks the mantis will need USDA Approved Wingless Fruit Flies, later they will eat crickets or silkworms. This species seems to continue on eating fruit flies, they never outgrow fruit flies as food, In the wild, these mantids eat mosquitos. If one can establish enough eggs from a pair, you can release some offspring into the yard and garden in the warm months, to control mosquitos. Enough of these released in the United States will show a dramatic reduction of the Med Fly and the mosquito! livemantis.com will contact you after you buy a mantis to inform you of where to get mantis food for all stages of the life of the mantis. Food is inexpensive and feeding requires very little effort on your part.

3. Water : A brand new never before used spray mist bottle will be needed. You should spray mist the lid of the container with three even mists once every 1 to 2 days. A single layer of plain white paper towel should be place on the floor of the container to prevent puddles of water. Never allow puddles as they will drown the feeder insects and possibly the mantis. The paper towel prevents puddles. Condensation on the side of the mantis enclosure should evaporate within 30 to 45 minutes, if not, add another vent. A 2x2 inch vent covered with nylon stocking type material will usually be adequate fro ventilation.
